The Godly Man

The last few months, the Morning Men’s Study at Kearney FBC has been studying what the Bible has to say about being a godly man. We have talked about a number of topics, taking a different passage each week and then discussing what we see that it demands of us as Christian men. It is important that we let Scripture speak. In order to do this, we made sure to observe what it says before we try to determine a meaning that we think it Continue reading →

Word to the (un)Wise

We dug into the book of James this morning, which is the New Testament book that most resembles the wisdom literature of the Old Testament (Proverbs and Ecclesiastes most specifically). It seeks to train people how to have right relationships with one another – “relational righteousness.” In our continuing series on what it means to be a Godly Man in the Tuesday morning men’s study, we dove into James 3:13-18 and the topic of wisdom. We discussed how wisdom can only be shown in deeds. Continue reading →

Community Is More Than Just a Show on NBC

Community. It’s a buzz word in the Church today. We use it to describe how we want to “do life together” and all that good stuff. However, just because something flies abuzz around the interwebs doesn’t make it a bad thing. After all, Scripture calls us into community. Tuesday morning in men’s group we discussed Galatians 6:1-5, which gives us the framework for how the Body of Christ is to function in community. Paul speaks a lot about how people are to relate to one Continue reading →

Want to be blameless?

The topic for this week’s Tuesday morning Men’s study was blamelessness as described by Psalm 15. It gives a list of qualities that someone should aspire to if they desire to have an intimate relationship with God. To dwell on God’s holy mountain would be a a great privilege. God chose Mt. Zion in Jerusalem for the special place that his presence would dwell on this earth before the coming of Christ. To be near to God is good (Ps 73:28). As sinful people, we Continue reading →

Why your Work is Good

This morning in our Godly Men series at the Tuesday Morning Men’s study we discussed the topic of Work (Genesis 2:15, Ecclesiastes 5:18). Work can be seen as such a horrible thing in our lives. We typically think of work as just a paycheck that comes with baggage. Heck, we see in Genesis 3:17-18 that work has been cursed by God to have pain associated with it. Surely work is a curse! However, we must recognize that in Genesis 2:15 God reveals through Moses that man’s Continue reading →

Being a Godly Father or Son

The topic for this week’s Morning Men’s group was Fatherhood from Ephesians 6:1-4. In this passage there is a discussion of fathers and children. The men in group today had some great insight into this passage due to the many years of cumulative experience that they had. When we dove into the study, some were able to express the difficulties of being sons whose dads did not live up to a godly standard. This helped to shape the discussion of what it means to be Continue reading →

Husbands, how are you loving your wife?

The topic this morning in our Godly Men series on Tuesday mornings was marriage in Ephesians 5:25-33. The Bible has a lot to say on marriage and how Christians should live in the marital union. However, the central passage that gives us deep insight into how husbands and wives should relate to one another is found in Ephesians 5. Throughout the commands issued to husbands in vs. 25-33 is the repetition of a man sacrificing for his wife, with the model being Jesus’ death on Continue reading →

Godly Men Pray (1 Tim. 2:1-8)

This morning’s men study focused on 1 Timothy 2:1-8 and prayer. We had a good group to discuss how prayer is to look in our lives. While in this passage there are many different directions someone can go (“What is meant by ‘all’ men?”, “If God desires all men to be saved then why aren’t they?”, “Why should hands be lifted in prayer?”, “Why aren’t some prayers answered?”, etc.) the main point is that God wants us to come before him in prayer on behalf Continue reading →

A Godly Man Series – Love

This morning’s topic at men’s group was love from 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. The reason we discussed this chapter was because it influences how we understand Paul’s command in 1 Cor. 16:14 to “do all things in love.” Since chapter 13 comes before chapter 16 it should influence our view of that command. Check out the notes here. Someone asked this morning about how we should understand 1 Corinthians 13:7 in light of sin that surrounds us in this world. For instance, how do we “always Continue reading →

A Godly Man Series – Strength

We dove into it this morning at the Morning Men’s study with some good coffee cake made by Mallory and some hot coffee. Our topic today was “Strength” in our Godly Men series. If you missed it or need a refresher, check out my notes. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 teaches us that our actions as men must be defined by love for the people of God in a way that holds fast to the truth of God’s word and helps them to see the Lord more Continue reading →
